Transportation in South Korea

South Korea's passenger transport system is easiest to understand by the kind of journey being made. Urban rail and local buses handle travel within cities and their surrounding commuter regions. Railway and long-distance buses connect cities. Domestic flights are especially important for Jeju and selected longer journeys, while passenger ferries link the mainland with islands and coastal communities. Taxis, bicycles and rental cars fill gaps at either end of these networks.

These modes meet at shared hubs rather than operating as separate worlds. A major railway station may also be an urban-rail station and local-bus interchange. A long-distance bus terminal may connect directly to a subway line. Airports and ferry terminals are reached by combinations of rail, bus, taxi and road transport. The most useful mental model is therefore a layered network: local modes provide access, intercity modes cover distance, and transfer hubs join them together.

Railway

South Korea's passenger railway links the Capital Area with major cities and regional centers along several corridors. It is distinct from urban rail: a Railway service is normally a scheduled intercity or regional train, while a subway or metropolitan train is part of an urban network. Some stations serve both systems, so the distinction concerns the service rather than the building.

KTX is the principal high-speed service family. General Trains (일반열차) provide a broader set of stopping patterns and regional links. Current General Train service names include ITX-Maum (ITX-마음), ITX-Saemaeul (ITX-새마을), Saemaeul-ho (새마을호), Mugunghwa-ho (무궁화호) and Nuriro (누리로). These services matter where high-speed trains do not stop, and they also provide different patterns along corridors shared with KTX.

The current timetable took effect on September 1, 2026. It contains 977 scheduled train numbers: 621 in the KTX family and 356 General Trains. The publication is organized into 24 timetable Lines, comprising 9 KTX Lines and 15 General Train Lines, and 256 Railway stations participate in the current schedules. These counts describe scheduled services and timetable structure, not physical trainsets or infrastructure lines.

The Seoul-Busan corridor shows how frequency and journey time combine. The current schedule contains 421 direct Seoul Station-to-Busan Station KTX services across a representative week, or about 60 services on an average day. The fastest scheduled trip takes 138 minutes—roughly two hours and twenty minutes—while the median is 164 minutes. High-speed operation is also in transition: the September 2026 timetable presents Suseo-origin services within the KTX timetable, following earlier SRT-KTX cross-running trials.

Urban rail, subway and metropolitan rail

Urban rail is the core high-capacity mode in the largest metropolitan areas. Networks operate in Seoul and the wider Capital Area, Incheon, Busan and Gimhae, Daegu, Daejeon, and Gwangju. The Seoul-centered system extends far beyond Seoul's administrative boundary into Incheon, Gyeonggi-do and adjoining provinces, so “Seoul subway” often describes a metropolitan network rather than only tracks inside the city.

The national picture includes conventional subways, metropolitan railway services, light rail and operator-specific lines. Busan's core city network has four lines and 114 stations, while separate services such as the Busan-Gimhae Light Rail extend the regional system. Daegu has three city lines; Incheon has two; Daejeon and Gwangju each have a single operating city line. The Capital Area adds KORAIL commuter routes, Airport Railroad, light-rail systems, privately operated lines and GTX-A.

Official national records illustrate the scale but must be read at the correct grain. The June 2026 KRIC station master contains 1,099 line-specific station records across 46 route codes. A transfer station served by several lines can appear several times, so this does not mean that South Korea has 1,099 distinct physical urban-rail stations. The clear national summary is dozens of lines and hundreds of stations.

Transfer hubs join urban rail to Railway stations, bus terminals and airports. Airport Railroad links Seoul Station with Incheon Airport Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. GTX, the Great Train eXpress (수도권광역급행철도), is a faster regional layer for longer Capital Area trips; GTX-A is the first operating route and remains part of the metropolitan network rather than the intercity KTX system.

Local, village and metropolitan buses

Buses provide the network's widest local reach. At the end of 2024, South Korea had about 17,800 bus routes nationwide. About 14,600 of them were city, rural and village-bus routes connecting urban neighborhoods, smaller towns, villages, schools, industrial districts and rural communities with larger transport hubs.

Their principal structural role is connection. Local buses distribute passengers from urban-rail stations, Railway stations, bus terminals, airports and ports into surrounding neighborhoods. Village Buses (마을버스) usually cover shorter local links. Trunk and branch services concentrate or distribute demand, while metropolitan and limited-stop commuter routes cross municipal boundaries and connect outer cities with major employment centers.

Names, colors and service categories are set regionally. Labels such as Trunk Bus (간선버스), Branch Bus (지선버스), Metropolitan Bus (광역버스), Metropolitan Express Bus (광역급행버스) and Direct Seat Bus (직행좌석버스) do not form one identical nationwide hierarchy. A bus number is also meaningful only with its city or regional context: the same number can identify unrelated routes in different places.

Express and intercity buses

South Korea maintains separate official information systems for Express Bus (고속버스) and Intercity Bus (시외버스) services. Both are organized around terminals and connect settlements beyond the practical reach of local bus networks.

At the end of 2024, official statistics counted approximately 3,200 intercity and express-bus routes nationwide.

Express buses generally cover longer terminal-to-terminal journeys using expressways without intermediate city stops. Intercity buses may use expressways and national roads, make intermediate stops, and serve a wider range of smaller cities and counties. Some terminals handle both types; elsewhere, the express and intercity terminals are separate facilities. Together they are particularly important for places without direct Railway service or where a bus provides the more direct regional link.

Taxi

Taxis provide point-to-point transport within cities and towns and serve as a first-mile or last-mile connection when scheduled services do not reach the exact origin or destination. Their role is most visible around stations, terminals, airports and late or infrequent local connections.

Airport access and domestic aviation

Airport access

Airport access is multimodal. Incheon International Airport is connected to Seoul and the Capital Area by Airport Railroad, airport buses, other connecting urban transport and taxis. Airport Railroad directly serves both passenger terminals and connects with urban rail at intermediate hubs. Regional airports use different combinations of urban rail, local or airport buses, taxis and road access according to their location.

Domestic aviation

South Korea has 15 operating civil airports, officially classified as 8 international airports and 7 domestic airports. “International” describes an airport's designated function; it does not mean that every service there is international. Korea Airports Corporation manages 14 regional airports, including Gimpo, Gimhae and Jeju, while Incheon International Airport Corporation operates Incheon separately.

Domestic flying has a distinct role rather than replacing the surface network. It is central to travel between the mainland and Jeju, and it can connect distant regions where geography or total surface travel time favors air service. Gimpo is a major domestic gateway for the Capital Area; Jeju and Gimhae are other major domestic nodes, while regional airports support more selective networks.

Incheon is the country's principal international aviation gateway by passenger volume. It handled 74,071,475 arriving and departing passengers in 2025, including both international and domestic traffic—the airport's highest annual total since opening. Stating the metric and year matters: this is a passenger-throughput figure for Incheon, not a general ranking of every airport characteristic.

Passenger ferries

Coastal passenger ferries connect the mainland with inhabited islands, link islands to one another, and maintain essential access for communities that have no road or rail connection. Their role is especially prominent along the island-dense west and south coasts and on routes to outlying islands such as Ulleungdo.

Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority statistics record 100 coastal passenger routes served by 149 vessels in 2025. Those services carried 12,604,404 passenger movements during the year. A route is the regulated connection being served; a passenger terminal is a land-side boarding facility; and one vessel may work within a route or operating pattern. These objects should not be treated as interchangeable counts.

Ferry schedules are more exposed to sea and weather conditions than land transport schedules. That operational sensitivity is part of the system's structure, particularly for remote islands, even though ferries also serve routine commuting, resident travel, vehicle carriage and tourism.

Bicycle and rental car

Public bicycles support short urban trips, access to local destinations and recreation, especially where cities provide dedicated sharing systems and riverside or neighborhood cycling networks. Rental cars complement public transport in islands, rural districts and areas where scheduled services are infrequent or dispersed. Neither mode replaces the national rail and bus network, but each can extend its practical reach.

The specific combination depends on geography. Dense metropolitan areas emphasize rail and frequent buses; smaller cities and counties depend more heavily on buses and taxis; islands add aviation or maritime links.
